NEBULA
Nebula is an exploration of colour, movement and texture.
In this piece layers of vivid colour wash over each other, fading in and out and metamorphosing seamlessly from one scene to the next. The individual layers or sheets move like the ebb and flow of the ocean tide, and resemble the galaxies and nebulae of space.
This resemblance was purposeful, the aim of Nebula is to create the feeling of drifting in space among the stars and gases, simultaneously observing its beauty as well as becoming entangled in it. It is ethereal and dreamlike.
To create the mood and atmosphere of the piece, Nebula consists of very slow and gradual movement, reflecting the soundtrack. This movement creates the appearance of the colours changing smoothly and organically. For every layer, each colour was selected carefully to work harmoniously with the others. These colours are a reflection of the soundtrack, as new sounds are introduced in the soundtrack, colour changes occur in the video.
Adobe Photoshop was used to create the numerous layers, and Adobe After Effects was used to composite them into the final art piece. The soundtrack of Nebula was created from field recordings of everyday sounds, in particular human humming and various foods being shaken. These sounds were edited in Audacity and compiled in Adobe Audition.
